Blacklights get their name because they emit very little visible light but lots of Ultra-Violet light. Light waves come in a vast spectrum of wavelengths, only a small section of which are visible to our eyes. Those light waves longer than red are called infra-red and those shorter than violet are called ultra-violet.
Ultra-violet light reacts with certain chemicals causing them to fluoress or glow, sometimes in bright colors. This is what makes Blacklight posters look so cool. Some ultra-violet waves are dangerous to the skin, but not the ones emitted by common Blacklights like this one.
Blacklights have been popular since the Sixties when people made posters and designs using psychedelic patterns and special inks that fluoress under the Blacklight’s purple glow.
